Delays are the most common disruption and the most poorly communicated. Airlines often update in short increments, which makes a five hour delay appear as five separate one hour delays.

Work out how bad it really is
- Check where the inbound aircraft is. If it has not departed yet, the delay will grow.
- Look for a crew issue, which can be quicker or much slower depending on standby availability.
- Weather at either end usually means an unpredictable wait.
- A technical fault at an airport where the airline has no engineering base often means a long wait.
Flight tracking apps show the inbound aircraft, which is often better information than the departure board. It is not a promise, but it tells you whether an hour is realistic.
What airlines usually provide
Provision depends on the airline, route and length of delay. Common practice is refreshments after a couple of hours, a meal for longer waits, and hotel accommodation if the delay runs overnight. Ask at the gate or service desk instead of waiting to be offered.

Keep records as you go
Collect while it happens
- Screenshots of each delay notification with times.
- Photos of the departure board showing the delay.
- Receipts for anything you buy.
- Boarding passes, kept even after the flight.
- Notes on what staff told you and when.
Deciding whether to abandon the trip
For short trips a long delay can destroy the purpose of travelling. Many airlines allow you to cancel and claim a refund when the delay passes a threshold, often around five hours. Ask specifically about this before you leave the airport, and get the cancellation confirmed in writing.
Comfort during a long wait
- Charge everything, and find a seat near a socket.
- Buy food before the whole flight has the same idea.
- Refill water rather than buying repeatedly.
- Ask whether the airline will open lounge access, which some do during long delays.
- Stay within announcement range, and keep checking the board for a gate change.

After you arrive
If the delay was long, consider whether a claim is worth making. Entitlement depends on the route, the airline and the cause, so check the carrier's conditions of carriage and the relevant national authority. Claim directly with the airline first, since claim agencies take a percentage for work you can usually do yourself in twenty minutes.
Common questions
- Can I leave the airport during a long delay?
- Only if you have not passed security or immigration and you can definitely return in time. Tell the airline before you go.
- Do delays qualify for compensation?
- Sometimes, depending on the length, the route and the reason. Check the airline's terms and your local passenger rights authority.
- Will my hotel refund the first night?
- That is between you and the hotel. Contacting them as soon as you know improves your chances considerably.
